About Louise Catherine Breslau
Louise Catherine Breslau, born on December 6, 1856 in Germany, was a renowned painter and artist. She is best known for her late nineteenth-century works including At Home (also known as Intimacy) and Portrait of Henry Davison. Breslau received her training at the famous Academie Julian in Paris and had the honor of displaying her artwork at the esteemed Paris Salon.
Although she was born in Munich, Germany, Breslau spent most of her upbringing in Zurich, Switzerland where her father worked as an obstetrician and gynecologist at the University of Zurich. Her interest in art developed during this time when she would often spend long periods bedridden due to severe asthma.
Born Maria Luise Katharina Breslau, she later changed her name to Louise Catherine Breslau. For more than forty years, she lived with her artistic muse and fellow student from Academie Julian, Madeleine Zillhardt.
