About Latasha Harlins
Latasha Harlins was born on January 1, 1976 in East St. Louis, Illinois. She became the victim of a high-profile murder case that took place in Los Angeles when she was shot and killed at the age of 15 by Soon Ja Du, a convenience store owner.
The judge’s decision to reduce Soon Ja Du’s sentence to probation and fines caused increased tensions between African-American residents and Korean-American business owners in South Central Los Angeles. This incident was one of several events that led up to the riots in 1992.
Prior to her untimely death, Latasha attended Westchester High School after relocating from East St. Louis to Los Angeles at the age of five.
Her legacy has been captured through various forms of art and remembrance, such as being commemorated with Latasha Harlins Day by the state of California on April 29th. Additionally, her story has inspired works including a documentary film titled A Love Song for Latasha and featured references in creative pieces like Ice Cube’s “Black Korea” song and novels like Your House Will Pay.
Latasha was raised by her maternal grandmother Ruth Harlins following her mother Crystal Harlin’s tragic death at the hands of her father’s new girlfriend; she also had siblings named Vester Acoff Jr. and Christina.
