About Larisa Latynina
Larisa Latynina, born on December 27, 1934 in Russia, is a former Soviet gymnast. She achieved great success in her career, winning a total of 14 Olympic medals, including 9 golds over the course of three different Olympic games. Her impressive medal count was second only to Michael Phelps.
Latynina made her international debut at the Rome World Championships in 1954 where she secured a gold medal in team competition. Her most successful Olympic showing came in 1956 when she won a total of six medals, four of which were gold.
Beyond her accomplishments on the mat, Latynina has familial ties to Pelageya Anisimovna Barabamyuk and Semyon Andreevich Diriy.
