About Kay Boyle
Kay Boyle, born on February 19, 1902 in Minnesota, was an American fiction and non-fiction author as well as a poet. She is best known for her novels Death of a Man (1936) and The Seagull on the Step (1955), along with poetry collections such as A Glad Day (1938) and The Lost Dogs of Phnom Penh (1968).
Before gaining recognition as a writer, Boyle attended the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and the Ohio Mechanics Institute to study violin and architecture respectively. Her writing career began after she moved to New York City in 1922 where she pursued journalism.
Boyle’s life took an interesting turn during the politically charged atmosphere of McCarthyism in the 1950s when she found herself blacklisted. This experience led her to become increasingly involved in political activism during this period.
Familially, Kay Boyle was born to attorney Howard Peterson Doyle and activist Katherine Evans. Throughout her life, she married five times and had six children.
