About Katie Geneva Cannon
Katie Geneva Cannon (born February 2, 1949) is a religious leader known for her advocacy of the womanist and black liberation theology movements. She served on the Christian Ethics faculty of Virginia’s Union Presbyterian Seminary and has authored publications such as Katie’s Canon: Womanism and the Soul of the Black Community and Womanist Theological Ethics: A Reader.
Before starting her career, Cannon graduated from Barber-Scotia College in North Carolina before pursuing theological studies at Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary in Georgia and Union Theological Seminary in New York.
Cannon was also notable for being the first African American female minister in the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. She was born in North Carolina and later lived and taught in Richmond, Virginia.
