About Katie Bouman
Katie Bouman is an American computer scientist specializing in the field of imaging. She is best recognized for her role as a key part of the Event Horizon Telescope Team, which captured the first image of a black hole in 2019.
Before gaining fame, she studied electrical engineering at the University of Michigan, where she graduated summa cum laude in 2011. She then earned her master’s and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology before joining Harvard University as a postdoctoral fellow on the Event Horizon Telescope Team.
Bouman has also been a member of the Haystack Observatory and was supported as a student by the National Science Foundation’s Graduate Fellowship program. She was born and raised in West Lafayette, Indiana to Charles Bouman, who was a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Purdue University.
