About Katherine Anne Porter
Katherine Anne Porter was an American novelist, journalist, and essayist born on May 15, 1890, in Texas. She is best known for her bestselling novel “Ship of Fools,” published in 1962. In 1965, she won both the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award for her work “The Collected Stories.”
Prior to gaining recognition as a writer, Porter worked briefly as an extra in movies while living in Chicago. After returning to Texas, she continued working as an actress.
Porter’s life was impacted by the 1918 influenza epidemic and she narrowly survived its effects.
Her family roots trace back to Indian Creek, Texas. Porter was one of five siblings and a descendant of frontiersman Daniel Boone with ties to famous writer O. Henry. Throughout her lifetime, Katherine Anne Porter married four times but did not have any children.
