About Karen Kwan
Karen Kwan, born on June 1, 1978 in California, is best known as the older sibling of Olympic silver and bronze medal-winning figure skater Michelle Kwan. She had a successful career as a competitive ice skater herself, winning the 1995 Pacific Coast Championship and placing fifth in the United States Championship that same year.
During their childhood years in California, Karen and her sister Michelle were both coached by Frank Carroll. After ending her figure skating career in the late 1990s, she pursued higher education and enrolled in the communications program at Boston University.
Karen married fellow skater Peter Oppegard with whom she has two daughters: Olivia and Sophia.
