About Karen Olsen Beck
Karen Olsen Beck, born on January 31, 1933 in New York, is best known as the wife of former Costa Rican president Jose Figueres Ferrer. She also served in the Legislative Assembly of Costa Rica and worked as a diplomat.
Prior to her fame, Karen attended Mary Washington College in Virginia where she became involved in social activism for the economically disadvantaged. Hailing from a Danish family but growing up in New York, she married Jose Figueres Ferrer in 1945 and together they had four children. Her daughter Christiana Figueres is a noted environmental and climate change activist, while her son, Jose Maria held office during the 1990s as President of Costa Rica.
