About Julia Morgan

Julia Morgan was a pioneering American architect born on January 20, 1872 in San Francisco, California. She made history as the first woman to obtain an architecture license in California and left an indelible mark on the architectural landscape of the state.

Morgan’s most famous work includes the landmark Hearst Castle, along with numerous YWCA buildings and structures for Mills College. She was also honored as the first woman to receive the AIA Gold Medal posthumously.

Prior to her architectural career, Morgan joined Kappa Alpha Theta sorority at the University of California in Berkeley before becoming the first woman allowed into Ecole nationale superieure des Beaux-Arts’s architecture program.

Over her career, she designed over 700 buildings in California including St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Berkeley and several buildings for Asilomar Conference Center. Julia came from a successful family background which inspired her pursuit of higher education, thanks in part to her mother Eliza Woodland Parmelee and cousin’s husband who served as an architect.
