About Judith Heumann
Judith Heumann is an American activist who has dedicated her life to fighting for disability rights. She was born on December 18, 1947, in Brooklyn, New York. Heumann gained recognition for the landmark case Heumann v. Board of Education of the City of New York, where she sued the Board of Education for discrimination after being denied a teaching license because of her wheelchair use. The case was settled without trial, and Heumann became the first wheelchair-user teacher in New York City.
Prior to her activism work, Heumann contracted polio at 18 months old and used a wheelchair throughout her life. Between ages 9 and 18, she attended Camp Jened in New York, a summer camp focused on disabilities.
Heumann played a pivotal role in developing the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act in 1974 and hosted The Heuman Perspective podcast starting in 2021. She also led the historic Section 504 Sit-in of 1977 and is credited with advancing legislation for disability rights.
Her parents immigrated from Germany to the USA, and she has two siblings including brother Joseph Heumann who is a film professor and author. In 1992 Judith married Jorge Pineda.
