About Judith Francisca Baca

Judith Francisca Baca (born September 20, 1946) is an American artist, activist, and civil rights leader. She currently serves as a professor of fine arts at UCLA and is best known for directing the Great Wall of Los Angeles.

Before gaining recognition as an artist and activist, Baca faced adversity in her early life. Growing up in Los Angeles, she was prohibited from speaking Spanish at school due to discriminatory policies. As a result of her limited proficiency in English, teachers assigned her to paint in a corner instead of participating with other students.

Baca’s belief in the power of imagination as a catalyst for global change led her to conceive the World Wall: A Vision of Future Without Fear project aimed at promoting peace and non-violence through art. Collaborating with artists worldwide on this endeavor exemplifies her commitment to fostering unity through creativity.

Born to Valentino Marcel whom she never met, Judith was raised by her mother Ortencia alongside half-siblings Gary and Diane under the care of two aunts named Rita and Delia. Her stepfather Clarence Ferrari also played a significant role in her upbringing while honoring the memory of her grandmother Francisca.
