Johnetta Elzie, born on April 16, 1989 in St. Louis, Missouri, is an activist known for her prominent role in the Black Lives Matter civil rights movement. She was recognized as one of the movement’s leaders by The Atlantic in January 2015 and was featured alongside her writing partner DeRay Mckesson as new civil rights leaders of the 21st century by the New York Times in that same year.
Prior to gaining recognition, Elzie rose to prominence through her coverage of the Ferguson, Missouri protests in 2014 via social media. She has also contributed to Amnesty International as a field organizer and was honored with a place on Fortune’s 2015 list of World’s Greatest Leaders for her impactful work within the Black Lives Matter movement.
