About Johanna Spyri
Johanna Spyri was a renowned children’s author born on June 12, 1827, in Hirzel, Switzerland. She is best known for her classic novel “Heidi,” originally published in 1881. Throughout her career, she authored over fifty works of fiction and became a popular Swiss literary figure.
Spyri began her literary journey by publishing “A Note on Vrony’s Grave,” which addressed domestic violence, in 1880. Her contributions to literature were later recognized through the depiction of her portrait on a Swiss postage stamp in 1951 and on a coin in 2009.
In 1852, she married attorney Bernhard Spyri; however, both he and their only child passed away tragically in 1884.
