About Joana Carneiro
Joana Carneiro is a Portuguese conductor known for her work with the Orquestra Sinfonica Portuguesa, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the Metropolitan Orchestra of Lisbon, and the Berkeley Symphony. She was also a fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Carneiro trained at the Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra in Portugal before earning advanced degrees in music from Northwestern University in Illinois and the University of Michigan.
In 2002, she won a conductor competition organized by the Young Musicians’ Foundation and was a finalist in Carnegie Hall’s Maazel-Vilar conducting competition. Her family includes her father Roberto Carneiro, who served as Portugal’s education minister, and her uncle Adelino Amaro da Costa, who had a political career.
