Simone Manuel is an American swimmer who made history by becoming the first African-American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in an individual swimming competition. She achieved this feat at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she set a new Olympic record of 52.70 seconds in the 100 meter freestyle event and also won gold in the 4×100 meter medley relay.
Born on August 2, 1996, in Houston, Texas, Manuel began her swimming journey at the age of five. After graduating from Austin High School, she went on to attend Stanford University and became a member of the Stanford Cardinal women’s swimming team.
Before her historic Olympic success, Manuel competed at the World Championships in Barcelona in 2013 as part of the US team that secured a gold medal in the freestyle relay event. In addition to her accomplishments in competitive swimming, Manuel has two older brothers who inspired her passion for the sport.
