About Jeanne Baret
Jeanne Baret was a French citizen born on July 27, 1740 in La Comelle, France. She is known as the first woman to circumnavigate the globe, achieving this feat by disguising herself as a man and joining the expedition led by Louis Antoine de Bougainville aboard the ships La Boudeuse and Etoile from 1766 to 1769.
Prior to her nautical exploits, Baret held various occupations such as housekeeper, valet, botanist, and tavern keeper. She served as an assistant to French naturalist Philibert Commercon during the voyage.
After being orphaned at age fifteen, Baret went on to have a relationship with Commercon and is believed to have had two sons named Jean-Pierre Baret and Aime Eugene Prosper Bonnefoy.
In recognition of her pioneering journey around the world, in 2018 the International Astronomical Union named a mountain range on Pluto after Jeanne Baret.
