About Janja Garnbret
Janja Garnbret is a Slovenian professional rock climber and Olympian who was born on March 12, 1999, in Slovenj Gradec, Slovenia. She gained prominence for her exceptional performance in competition lead climbing and bouldering events, securing multiple victories.
Garnbret made history by becoming the first-ever female Olympic gold medalist in climbing during the 2021 Olympics. Additionally, she was featured in the Netflix documentary The Wall – Climb for Gold released in 2022.
Her journey into rock climbing started at the age of seven and she participated in her first national competition at eight years old. Notably, Garnbret achieved her first major success by winning a bouldering competition at the 2013 European Youth Championships. Her consistent wins across various rock climbing events led to her qualification for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Regarded as one of the greatest competition climbers of all time, Garnbret holds several impressive records including being the first female climber to successfully complete numerous challenging routes. Apart from her athletic prowess, she is also fluent in both English and Slovenian.
Garnbret was raised in Slovenj Gradec, Slovenia by her parents Darja and Vili Garnbret.
