About Janet Frame
Janet Frame was a New Zealand-born author, poet, and novelist known for works such as Owls Do Cry and The Pocket Mirror. She was born on August 28, 1924 in New Zealand. Before gaining literary acclaim, she enrolled in a teacher training course at the Dunedin College of Education in 1943 and received a national literary prize for her debut work, The Lagoon and Other Stories.
In addition to her writing accolades, Frame also received the Hubert Church Prose Award. Despite her success as an author, she faced personal challenges including struggle with schizophrenia and narrowly escaping a lobotomy. Janet was one of five children born into a working-class New Zealand family of Scottish heritage.
