About Irene Khan
Irene Khan is a British Bangladeshi human rights activist known for her work as the 7th Secretary General of Amnesty International and as editor of The Daily Star. She was born on December 24, 1956, in Sylhet, Bangladesh.
Before rising to prominence, Khan played a crucial role in establishing Concern Universal in 1977 – an emergency relief organization. Her uncle, Mahbub Ali Khan, served as chief of the Bangladesh Navy.
Khan faced controversy when it was revealed that following her resignation from Amnesty International she received £533,103 – nearly four times her annual salary.
