About Irena Sibley
Irena Sibley (born June 16, 1943) is a Lithuanian-born Australian artist and illustrator of children’s books. She is known for her works such as “The Bilbies’ First Easter,” “When the Sun Took the Colours Away,” and “Zara’s Zoo.”
Prior to gaining recognition as an author, Sibley established the art department at Xavier Preparatory School and published her first book, “Rainbow,” in 1980.
Beyond her creative pursuits, Irena Sibley was a passionate environmentalist with a deep appreciation for native Australian plants and animals.
Sibley’s parents escaped Communist-occupied Lithuania in 1946 when she was just a toddler. In 1967, she married fellow artist Andrew Sibley, with whom she had two sons: Benedict and Jonathan.
