About Ina Coolbrith

Ina Coolbrith (born March 10, 1841) was an American poet and the inaugural California Poet Laureate. She was born in Nauvoo, Illinois and is best known for her poems “The Mother’s Grief” and “When the Grass Shall Cover Me.” Coolbrith published many of her works in The Overland Monthly, a prominent California-based literary journal.

Coolbrith began writing at eleven years old and had her first poem published at fifteen. She found work as a librarian for the Oakland Library Association, which would later become the Oakland Free Library. Born to Mormon leader Joseph Smith Jr.’s niece, she left the Mormon community during her teens to move to Los Angeles.
