About Hilaree Nelson
Hilaree Nelson (born December 13, 1972) is a renowned mountain climber known for her remarkable achievements in the field of mountaineering and skiing.
She gained widespread recognition for becoming the first woman to summit two 8000-meter peaks in a 24-hour period by conquering both Mount Everest and Lhotse on May 25, 2012. In addition, she made history by executing the first ski descent of the Dream Line from the summit of Mount Lhotse in 2018.
Tragically, Nelson passed away on September 26, 2022 after being knocked off the top of Manaslu’s summit by an avalanche while climbing in Nepal.
Prior to gaining fame as a mountaineer, Nelson began skiing at Stevens Pass in Washington State at just three years old. She later honed her technical climbing skills during her time living in France and secured sponsorship with The North Face in 1999 which kickstarted her professional climbing career.
A revered figure within the adventure sports community, Nelson was recognized as one of Men’s Journal’s “25 Most Adventurous Women of the Past 25 Years” and was also named one of National Geographic’s Adventurers of the Year in 2018. Notably serving as team captain for The North Face’s global athletic team, she participated in over forty mountaineering expeditions throughout her career.
