About Henrietta Leavitt
Henrietta Leavitt, born on July 4, 1868, in Lancaster, Massachusetts, was an American astronomer. She is known for her pioneering work in measuring the relative brightness of Cepheid variables, which proved instrumental in enabling scientists to calculate distances to stars.
Leavitt began her career at Harvard College Observatory where she meticulously calculated and recorded the brightness of stars. Her astute observations of a class of stars that exhibited pulsating variations in brightness led to groundbreaking advancements in interstellar distance calculations with unprecedented accuracy.
Tragically, Leavitt passed away before witnessing the full impact of her work. However, her legacy endured through the posthumous application of her findings. Her research ultimately contributed to the revelation that the Milky Way is not solitary but rather one among numerous galaxies within our observable universe.
Beyond her achievements in astronomy, Henrietta Leavitt hailed from a family deeply rooted in academia; she was George Roswell Leavitt’s daughter – a prominent Congregational church minister.
