Helga Estby (born May 30, 1860) was a Norwegian immigrant to the United States who gained fame for undertaking a daring walk across the country in an effort to win $10,000 for her struggling family. Born in Oslo, Norway, she moved to the U.S. with her parents in 1871. After her family farm fell on hard times during the crisis of 1896, Estby devised a wager with a party in New York that she could walk from coast to coast within seven months. While she completed her journey beyond the deadline and did not collect her prize as a result, she also faced accusations of abandoning her family. Nonetheless, her remarkable feat has left an enduring legacy.
