About Helen Vendler
Helen Vendler is an American literary critic, academic author, and professor, known for her work as a judge for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award in Poetry. She was born on April 30, 1933 in Massachusetts.
Before gaining recognition in the world of literature, Vendler received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a Fulbright Fellowship in mathematics. She then went on to earn a Ph.D. in English and American Literature from Harvard University.
Vendler has authored scholarly publications such as Modern American Poets and Stevens: Poems. In addition, she was chosen by The National Endowment for the Humanities to deliver the Jefferson Lecture in 2004.
Vendler married philosopher Zeno Vendler and they had one son before their divorce.
