About Helen Herron Taft
Helen Herron Taft was a prominent political figure and the wife of President William Howard Taft. She served as the First Lady of the United States from 1909 to 1913, during which time she organized the planting of 3,020 Japanese cherry trees in the Washington Tidal Basin.
She was born on June 2, 1861, in Cincinnati, Ohio, into a family with strong ties to both politics and the arts. Helen met her future husband at a bobsledding party in Cincinnati before their marriage.
Despite prohibition being a highly contested issue at that time, she was known for her support of entertainment and alcohol consumption. The Tafts had two sons and one daughter.
