About Helen Keller
Helen Keller was a famous American woman born on June 27, 1880, in Tuscumbia, Alabama. Despite being deaf and blind, she became known as an activist for women’s suffrage and a leftist political advocate. Throughout her life, Keller authored twelve books and numerous articles.
Prior to her fame, Keller contracted a disease at the age of nineteen months which left her visually impaired and unable to hear. As a child, she developed physical signs to communicate with others around her. Her childhood education under the tutelage of Anne Sullivan served as inspiration for the Broadway play “The Miracle Worker” and its subsequent Oscar-winning film adaptation based on Keller’s autobiography “The Story of My Life”.
Being born into the family of Kate Adams and Arthur H. Keller who was both a newspaper editor and Confederate Army Captain from Tuscumbia alongside having personal connections to Confederate General Robert E. Lee through paternal grandmother roots shaped Helen’s early years.
