Helen Gahagan Douglas (born November 25, 1900) was an American actress and politician who represented California’s 14th district from 1945 to 1951. She was the first Democratic woman elected to Congress from California.
Prior to her political career, Douglas had a successful stint as a Broadway star in the 1920s. She also gained attention for her open secret love affair with Lyndon B. Johnson, who at that time was still a Congressman.
