About Hannah Cowley
Hannah Cowley (March 14, 1743) was an English playwright known for her works such as The Runaway (1776) and the popular The Belle’s Stratagem (1780). Her writing often centered on marriage and the challenges faced by women in overcoming social and familial injustice.
Before becoming a playwright, Cowley frequently attended the theater, which inspired her to pursue dramatic writing. Her debut work, The Runaway, premiered in 1776 at London’s Drury Lane theatre and ran for seventeen performances during its initial season.
In addition to her successful career as a playwright, she attempted to write poetry but found greater acclaim with her plays. Born in Tiverton, Devon, England to bookseller Phillip Parkhouse and Hannah Richards Parkhouse, she later married journalist Thomas Cowley with whom she raised several children.
