About Grethe Barrett Holby
Grethe Barrett Holby was born on April 26, 1948 in New York. She is a director known for her work in opera and choreography. Before gaining fame, Holby earned degrees in art and architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and performed with Laura Dean’s dance company. She went on to found and lead several arts organizations including American Opera Projects, Family Opera Initiative, and Ardea Arts, Inc.
In the early 1980s, she notably choreographed the first production of Gian Carlo Menotti’s opera A Bride from Pluto. Holby is also recognized as a successful entrepreneur, dancer, and producer.
She is married to photographer Arthur Elgort and they have three children; actor Ansel Elgort, photographer Sophie Elgort, and filmmaker Warren Elgort.
