About Grandma Moses
Anna Mary Robertson Moses, also known as Grandma Moses, was a renowned American folk artist born on September 7, 1860 in New York. Despite beginning her painting career at the age of 78, she became famous for her rural and nostalgic scenes. During the 1950s, she gained immense popularity, with her exhibitions breaking attendance records globally.
Over 30 years, Grandma Moses created more than 1600 canvasses before being discovered by engineer and art collector Louis J. Caldor in 1938. Her late-in-life success led to international recognition that included a Life magazine cover heralding her 100th birthday in September 1960.
Born Anna Mary Robertson, Grandma Moses developed an early love for embroidery but transitioned to painting due to arthritis after encouragement from her sisters. She married Thomas Salmon Moses in 1887 and had ten children, although only five survived infancy. She lived until the age of 101 before passing away.
