Gloria Gaynor, born on September 7, 1943, in Newark, New Jersey, is a prominent pop singer best known for her disco classic “I Will Survive,” which was released in 1978 and received a Grammy Award for Best Disco Recording in 1980. Before rising to fame as a singer, she pursued business courses and attended beauty school to fulfill her mother’s wishes. Her first hit, “Never Can Say Goodbye,” catapulted her into overnight disco stardom. Gaynor is also recognized for other hits such as “Let Me Know (I Have a Right)” from 1979 and “I Am What I Am” from 1983.
In October of 1979, Gaynor married Linwood Simon; however the couple divorced in 2005.
