Gladys Zender is a Peruvian model who made history as the first Latin American woman to win the Miss Universe pageant in 1957. Born on October 19, 1938, in Peru, she achieved this prestigious title at the age of 17, below the customary age requirement, but ultimately retained her crown.
Following her triumph, Zender’s influence extended beyond beauty contests with Peruvian composer Alicia Maguina dedicating a song to her titled “Polka a Gladys Zender.” In terms of personal life, she married Antonio Meier in 1965 and together they have four children.
