About Giannina Braschi
Giannina Braschi, born on February 5, 1953 in Puerto Rico, is a novelist known for her pioneering work in Spanglish literature. Her most famous novel, Yo-Yo Boing! was published in 1998 and showcases her unique use of language. Other notable works include Empire of Dreams, a collection of post-modern poems, as well as United States of Banana, a philosophical novel.
Prior to gaining recognition as an author, Braschi excelled as a tennis player and achieved the first place ranking at the 1966 US Tennis Association’s national tournament held in her hometown. She officially entered the literary world with the publication of her first book Asalto al tiempo in 1980.
Awarded with the prestigious PEN/Open Book Award is just one accolade that acknowledges Braschi’s literary contributions. Raised in San Juan and later living abroad in Spain, Italy, France and England has broadened her perspective which reflects through her writing. She advanced academically by studying Hispanic Literature at State University of New York at Stony Brook.
