Gertrude Lawrence, born on July 4, 1898 in England, was a stage actress known for her award-winning performance as Anna Leonowens in the Broadway musical “The King and I”, which earned her a Tony Award in 1952. She also starred in other notable productions such as “Blithe Spirit”, “Pygmalion”, and “Private Lives”.
Prior to her fame, she began acting at a young age, performing in productions at the Liverpool Repertory Theatre. Her best-known screen role is that of Amanda Wingfield in the 1950 film adaptation of “The Glass Menagerie”.
In 1940, she married Richard Aldrich as her second husband; previously, she was married to Francis Gordon-Howley.
