About Georgia O’Keeffe

Georgia O’Keeffe was a renowned modernist artist born on November 15, 1887, in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. She is best known for her striking paintings of flowers and Western landscapes, including the iconic “Summer Days.”

O’Keeffe received numerous accolades for her contributions to the art world, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Gerald R. Ford in 1977 and the National Medal of Arts in 1985.

Her artistic journey began at age 10 when she decided to pursue a career as an artist and started studying with local watercolorist Sara Mann. In 1916, her breakthrough came when Anita Pollitzer introduced Alfred Stieglitz of the influential 291 gallery to O’Keeffe’s charcoal drawings, leading to their exhibition.

In addition to her artistic achievements, O’Keeffe made history with her 1946 exhibition at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, which marked MOMA’s first retrospective for a female artist.

O’Keeffe was born to Ida and Francis O’Keeffe, who were dairy farmers. Her given name honored her maternal grandfather George Victor Totto – a Hungarian count. In 1918, she entered into a relationship with Stieglitz and married him in 1924 after he secured a divorce from his wife.
