About Gabriele Grunewald
Gabriele Grunewald was a professional middle-distance runner who competed in distances from 800 meters to 5000 meters. Born on June 25, 1986, in Perham, Minnesota, she gained national recognition for her achievements in track and field.
Before becoming a professional athlete, Grunewald competed for the University of Minnesota where she excelled as a runner. She was the national runner-up in the 1500 meters at the 2010 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
In addition to her collegiate success, Grunewald became the national champion in the 3000 meters at the 2014 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships. She also represented the U.S. at the 2014 IAAF World Indoor Championships and finished ninth overall.
Despite her athletic accomplishments, Gabriele faced personal challenges when diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma in 2009. Overcoming multiple surgeries to remove tumors associated with this rare cancer type demonstrated her perseverance both on and off the track.
Grunewald sadly passed away in 2019 after bravely battling cancer. Through it all, she remained dedicated to running while raising awareness about rare cancers within athletics.
Gabriele was married to Justin Grunewald until her passing and left behind a legacy that continues to inspire many within both sports and medical communities today.
