About Freya Stark
Freya Stark (1893-01-31) was a renowned memoirist best known for her extensive writings on her travels in Afghanistan and the Middle East. Born in Paris, France, she grew up primarily in Italy and developed a passion for languages and literature from an early age. Stark taught herself to read French and Latin as a child before later learning Arabic and Persian.
Stark’s fascination with the book Arabian Nights led her to pursue further studies at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies. Her literary career took off, with notable works including The Journey’s Echo: Selected Travel Writings and The Southern Gates of Arabia: A Journey in the Hadhramaut.
Following World War II, Stark embarked on expeditions to Turkey, documenting her experiences in books such as The Lycian Shore and Ionia, a Quest. In addition to her travel writing, she also penned personal memoirs and essays that showcased her deep understanding of the regions she explored.
Stark’s diverse background – born to an Italian-German-Polish mother and an English artist father – informed much of her work. In later years, she married Stewart Perowne, a diplomat, historian, and archaeologist.
