About Francia Marquez-Mina
Francia Marquez-Mina is a Colombian human rights and environmental activist and lawyer. She was born on December 1, 1981, in Colombia. Marquez-Mina is currently serving as the 13th vice president of Colombia, making history as the first Afro-Colombian to hold this position.
Her journey as an activist began at the age of 13 when she fought against the construction of a dam threatening her community. She earned a degree in agricultural technology from the National Learning Service of Colombia and later obtained a law degree from the University of Santiago de Cali in 2020.
In recognition of her efforts to combat illegal gold mining in her community, La Toma, she was awarded the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize in 2018.
Marquez-Mina hails from a family with ties to agriculture and mining—her father works as a miner while her mother is both a farmer and midwife.
