Frances Folsom Cleveland Preston was born on July 21, 1864, in New York. She is best known for being the wife of United States President Grover Cleveland and serving as the First Lady of the United States from 1886 to 1889 and again from 1893 to 1897. At the age of 21, she became the youngest First Lady in history.
Prior to her time as First Lady, Frances attended Wells College in Aurora, New York. In 1886, she married Grover Cleveland, a friend of her father’s.
In honor of Frances Folsom Cleveland Preston’s legacy, her Alma mater Wells College constructed Cleveland Hall in her honor in 1911. She later had children named Ruth, Esther, Marion, Richard and Francis.
After Grover Cleveland’s death, Frances remarried archaeology professor Thomas J. Preston Jr., making her the first presidential widow to remarry.
