About Florence Balcombe
Florence Balcombe, born on July 17, 1858 in Northern Ireland, was best known as the wife of Dracula author Bram Stoker. She is remembered for her act of destroying numerous copies of the 1922 movie Nosferatu after the filmmakers refused to acknowledge that they had borrowed the plot from her husband’s famous horror novel.
Before gaining notoriety through her association with Bram Stoker, Florence grew up in Newcastle, County Down, Northern Ireland as the daughter of Phillippa Anne Marshall and James Balcombe, a military officer.
In an interesting turn of events during the 1920s, she allowed her neighbor Hamilton Deane to adapt Dracula into a stage play.
Florence’s family life revolved around her more than three-decade long marriage to Bram Stoker. The couple welcomed a son named Irving Noel Thornley Stoker.
