About Florence Ellinwood Allen
Florence Ellinwood Allen (born March 23, 1884) was an American politician born in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was known as the first woman to serve on a state supreme court as an Associate Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court. Additionally, she held the position of Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit from 1958 to 1959.
Before entering politics, Allen initially pursued music but switched to journalism after suffering an arm injury that ended her dreams of becoming a professional pianist. It was through journalism that she developed an interest in law.
Allen combined her knowledge of law with a commitment to women’s suffrage and began challenging laws that restricted women from voting.
Born into a political family, her father Clarence Emir Allen was a member of the Utah House of Representatives.
