About Fannie Hurst
Fannie Hurst was a prolific American novelist, born on October 18, 1889, in Hamilton, Ohio. She is best known for her works such as Stardust (1921), A President is Born (1927), Back Street (1931), and Imitation of Life (1933). The latter work addressed race relations and was adapted into a film in 1934.
Before gaining fame as a writer, she attended Washington University in St. Louis and later became involved with various political organizations including the Lucy Stone League, the World Health Organization, the Urban League, and the Works Progress Administration’s National Advisory Committee.
Hurst also had an affair with Arctic explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson. She came from an upper-class Jewish family in Hamilton, Ohio and married pianist Jacques Danielson in 1915.
