About Eva Ibbotson
Eva Ibbotson (born January 21, 1925 in Vienna, Austria) was a renowned children’s author known for her acclaimed novels such as The Abominables, Which Witch?, and Journey to the River Sea. In addition to her work for young readers, she also wrote several bestselling works for adults including A Song for Summer and The Morning Gift.
Before finding success as a writer, Ibbotson grew up in Vienna as Eva Maria Charlotte Michelle Wiesner. Coming from a Jewish family, she was compelled to flee Austria during the rise of the Nazi regime in the 1930s.
Ibbotson’s novel Journey to the River Sea earned her widespread recognition when it won the prestigious Smarties Prize in 2001. She met Alan Ibbotson while they were both students at Cambridge University; later marrying him and raising four children together with him.
