About Ethel Griffies
Ethel Griffies (April 26, 1878 – September 9, 1975) was a British actress known for her work on both stage and screen. She appeared in over twenty Broadway productions, including The Autumn Garden (1951) and Ivanov (1966). Griffies also guest starred in episodes of The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, Lights Out, and Kraft Theatre.
On film, she was recognized for her roles in Saratoga Trunk (1945) and The Homestretch (1947). Her career began in London with a stage debut in 1899 before making her Broadway debut in Havoc (1904).
A notable role for Griffies was playing Grace Poole in the screen adaptations of Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre released in 1934 and 1943. Born Ethel Woods to Lillie Roberts and Samuel Rupert Woods in Sheffield, England. After the death of her first husband Walter Beaumont, she married English actor Edward Cooper and remained married until his passing.
