About Esther Perel
Esther Perel is a Belgian psychologist known for her expertise in intimacy, sexuality, and relationship health. Born on August 13, 1958, in Antwerp, Belgium, she gained recognition after writing the book “Mating in Captivity: Unlocking Erotic Intelligence,” which delves into sexual relationships and tensions.
Perel’s interest in writing was sparked by an article she penned in response to societal reactions surrounding the Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky scandal. She has also hosted two podcasts titled “Where Should We Begin” and “How’s Work.”
Prior to her fame as an author and podcaster, Perel earned a B.A. in educational psychology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem before obtaining a Master’s Degree from Lesley University. Over the course of 13 years, she taught at New York University with her initial focus on helping couples navigate cultural transitions.
In addition to her professional pursuits, Perel appeared in the 2017 film “Newness” and is married to Jack Saul—a professor at Columbia University—with whom she shares two sons named Adam and Noan. Her parents are Sala Ferlegier and Icek Perel—both survivors of Nazi concentration camps—and their resilience following extreme trauma greatly influenced Esther’s decision to pursue psychology.
