About Empress Matilda
Empress Matilda was born on February 7, 1102, in England. Also known as Empress Maude, she is considered by some to have been the first queen of England.
After the death of her brother, she rose to the throne and defended her claim against her cousin Stephen, sparking a nearly 20-year civil war in England known as the Anarchy (1135-1153). Her son Henry succeeded her and became the next monarch.
Before ascending to power, she was married off at age 11 to become empress of Rome after marrying Henry V in Germany. She was known for being strong-willed and unyielding in her preferences.
Her father was Henry I of England and her mother Matilda of Scotland. Her only full brother was William Adelin. It’s rumored that there were more siblings due to their father’s numerous mistresses. After becoming a widow from the Roman emperor Henry V of Germany, she remarried Geoffrey V, Count of Anjou. She had three children: King Henry II Of England; Geoffrey; and William Fitz Empress
