About Empress Elisabeth of Austria
Empress Elisabeth of Austria was born on December 24th, 1837 in Munich, Germany. She is famously known as Sisi or Sissi and served as Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary from 1854 until her tragic death in 1898. Elisabeth became a member of the Habsburg house upon her marriage to Franz Joseph I on April 24th, 1854.
Elisabeth’s life came to a sudden end when she was stabbed by an assassin while traveling through Geneva, Switzerland. Her reign as Austrian Empress lasted for an impressive 44 years, marking her as the longest-reigning empress in Austrian history.
Before ascending to royalty, Elisabeth was born into the royal Bavarian House of Wittelsbach and spent her childhood at Possenhofen Castle on Lake Starnberg in Bavaria, Germany. She is readily recognized for her long brown hair which became a prominent feature in painted portraits. The elaborate care regime and styling process for her hair drew attention due to its multi-hour duration carried out by her dedicated hairdresser Franziska Feifalik.
At the age of sixteen, she married Emperor Franz Joseph I with whom she had four children: Archduchess Sophie, Archduchess Gisela,Crown Prince Rudolf,and Archduchess Marie Valerie.
