About Elza Plieksane
Elza Plieksane, born on March 16, 1865 in Latvia, was a prominent Latvian poet and playwright known for her feminist-themed works. She wrote under the pen name “Aspazija” and was renowned for her dramatic works such as Vaidelote, Silver Veil, and Simple Rights. Additionally, she produced poetic pieces like Red Flowers and Soul’s Twilight.
Prior to gaining recognition as a literary figure, Plieksane actively participated in various political organizations during her youth, including the leftist New Current group.
Plieksane drew from both realistic and neo-romantic styles in her writing. She hailed from a family of relatively well-off peasants near Jelgava in Latvia.
